Dodgers Sign Former Rangers’ World Series Champion Pitcher to Bolster Rotation: Report
John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports

As the MLB enters the final month of the regular season, many teams around the league are still fighting for playoff positioning.

Among those teams are the Los Angeles Dodgers who currently hold a 78-59 record and lead the San Diego Padres by two games in the National League West division.

Los Angeles has had a great season thus far as they try to defend their World Series title from last season and they will now enter a series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday looking to continue their hot streak as they have won six of their last 10 games.

While the Dodgers have had a solid season thus far, they have once again struggled to keep their pitchers healthy as they have multiple pitchers in their rotation and out of the bullpen on the IL.

Dodgers sign Andrew Heaney

Because of this, Los Angeles decided to make a major move on Monday as MLB insider Jon Heyman reported that they signed veteran pitcher Andrew Heaney.

Heyman did mention in his report that Heaney will begin his time with the Dodgers at Triple-A Oklahoma City but he was signed in time to be playoff eligible.

Of course, Heaney is a former World Series champion with the Texas Rangers in 2023 and he began this season with the Pirates before they released the 34-year-old on Friday.

In 26 appearances (23 starts) this season for the Pirates, Heaney posted a 5-10 record with a 5.39 ERA.

He began the season off strong as he posted a 3.33 ERA through his first 14 starts. Since June 19, his ERA rose to 9.21 and Pittsburgh elected to move him to the bullpen before eventually releasing him on Friday.

For Heaney, this will now be second stint with the Dodgers as he also pitched for them during the 2022 season.

During that season, he had a 4-4 record over 16 games (14 starts) and posted a 3.10 ERA.

For Heaney, while he will begin his second stint in Los Angeles in Triple-A, it is expected that they will eventually return to the major league level where he will either become a starting pitcher for the Dodgers or they could even have him come out of the bullpen.

Either way, the 34-year-old will likely have a shot to be a key piece for the Dodgers as they try to finish off the season strong and chase their second consecutive championship.
