Dustin May Shares Mindset After Another Bad Outing

Dustin May is unsure what his role will be for the Milwaukee Brewers in the postseason after another difficult outing Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

May pitched two innings and allowed two earned runs on one hit and two walks in Milwaukee’s loss. The appearance came on three days’ rest as the Brewers continue to evaluate their pitching options ahead of October.

After the game, May admitted he no longer feels he has much say in what comes next.

“I’m just gonna do what I’m told at this point. I don’t feel like I’ve pitched my way into having a say in anything. I’m just going to do what they tell me,” May said, via Brewers beat reporter Curt Hogg.

Next steps for Dustin May? TBD. He’s not sure what’s next, including role, because of how he’s pitched.

The comments came after another uneven stretch since May joined Milwaukee at the trade deadline. He has gone 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP, 33 strikeouts and 14 walks across 33.2 innings in nine appearances with the Brewers.

May’s struggles have come after a comebacker struck him in the upper back on his first pitch against the New York Mets on Aug. 26. X-rays were negative, but he was forced to leave after just one pitch.

May has shown flashes since returning. He threw six scoreless innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Sept. 12, allowing two hits while striking out six. However, he followed that outing with 2.1 innings and three earned runs against the Baltimore Orioles before Tuesday’s abbreviated appearance.

Milwaukee acquired May and left-handed reliever JoJo Romero from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline with the postseason in mind. May’s experience has been part of the reason the Brewers remain interested in using him during October.

The Brewers have already secured the NL Central and a first-round bye, giving them time to determine how May fits into their postseason plans. For now, May’s own comments make it clear that his role remains unsettled.
