The Miami Marlins are giving right-hander Jack Ralston another opportunity at the major league level after recalling him from Triple-A Jacksonville ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Washington Nationals.
The move comes just weeks after Ralston had his contract selected and was subsequently optioned back to the minors. This time, the 28-year-old is in line to make his official MLB debut the moment he enters a game.
To create roster space, Miami designated veteran left-hander John King for assignment.

Ralston’s journey to the majors has been a long one. A former seventh-round draft pick out of UCLA, he spent seven seasons working through the minor leagues before earning his first call-up opportunity.
The Marlins have been searching for reliable bullpen depth throughout August, and Ralston’s recent performance with Triple-A Jacksonville helped force the issue. His ability to generate strikeouts with a high-spin fastball and sweeping slider made him an appealing option for a bullpen that continues to shuffle pieces late in the season.
Sunday’s timing is especially important because Miami is looking to finish its series against Washington on a positive note while remaining within reach of the National League Wild Card picture.
Ralston’s arrival also provides insurance behind starter Janson Junk, who is not expected to work deep into the game. The fresh arm could be asked to cover multiple innings if needed.
Meanwhile, King’s designation ends his latest stint with the organization and opens additional flexibility on the 40-man roster heading toward September roster expansion.
For the Marlins, the transaction is about more than roster management. It’s an opportunity to evaluate another homegrown arm while giving Ralston the chance to complete a journey that began years ago in the minor leagues.
