Mets, Cadillac announce new member-only speakeasy at Citi Field

Since owner Steve Cohen purchased the New York Mets in 2020, the franchise has enjoyed a luxury lifestyle that extends beyond its record payroll.

In honor of New York's original owner Joan Payson, the Mets and Cadillac announced the team's new speakeasy membership club behind the right field fence at Citi Field on Tuesday.

The Cadillac Club at Payson's offers an exclusive baseball experience with just 100 seats, accommodating 25-30 members.

The club features lounge-style seating, individual flat-screen monitors, and an in-stadium concierge. Members will have assigned seats on game day and can enjoy complimentary parking, food, and beverages.

Membership does not come cheap. First-row seating costs $24,999 per seat, which is not on sale. Third and fourth-row seating is available at a lower price of $19K per seat, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. Each member will also be able to buy guest passes.

"Alex [Cohen] and I are thrilled to honor the legacy of Joan Payson with The Cadillac Club at Payson's," Cohen said in a press release. "As the original owner of the Mets and pioneer, Joan has played a significant role in our organization.

"The Cadillac Club at Payson's will combine the rich history of the Mets with unique elements that are reminiscent of classic New York City, providing Mets fans with an experience like no other."

In 1962, Payson became the first woman to purchase a majority stake in a major league team, owning the Mets until she died in 1975. During her tenure, New York won its first World Series title in franchise history (1969).

The speakeasy will impact the game as the team moved the right field fence by eight-and-a-half feet. For the Mets, who finished in the middle of the pack in terms of home runs last season (16th in MLB), the new dimensions could increase their total this season.

Aside from The Cadillac Club at Payson's, Citi Field will have another exciting addition for the 2023 season. The team recently installed a state-of-the-art 4K LED scoreboard that they tested with a game of "Mario Kart 64."

While the new features will undoubtedly increase fan engagement, the absence of star closer Edwin Díaz’s "Narco" entrance song blaring over the speakers will leave a void.

The Mets will debut their speakeasy and scoreboard against Miami in their home opener on April 6.
