Miami Marlins First Baseman Matt Mervis has had a strong first 13 games of the regular season. He has 6 home runs in his first 13 games of the year. That tied him for the most in franchise history over that span. He joined Derrick Lee in 1998, Miguel Cabrera in 2024, and Mike Jacobs in 2008.

Wednesday was an even better day for the first baseman as he turned 28. Mervis is hitting .275 with 6 home runs and 12 RBI this year. Will he be able to keep up his high level of play for a Miami Marlins team looking to defy expectations?

Miami Marlins Season Summary

Miami entered the regular season with low expectations. They are 8-9 a few weeks into the regular season. Their offense has been weak outside of Mervis. They are eighth in batting average, 20th in runs scored, and 25th in home runs. Shortstop Xavier Edwards has also gotten out of the gates well.

Miami’s pitching staff has been the weaker part of its team this season. They are 26th in ERA, 18th in opposing batting average, and 26th in WHIP. Former Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara has struggled to find his footing after missing all of last season. He is 2-0 with a 4.70 ERA.

Final Thoughts

The Marlins return to the diamond this afternoon for the finale of their three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks. After the game, they head on the road for a weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Mervis will look to keep swinging one of the hottest bats in the league.
