Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Andruw Monasterio has been torching the baseball. Inserted into the everyday lineup when Joey Ortiz went down, the third-year utility player has more than picked up the slack. In Friday’s 7-2 win over Toronto, Monasterio got the scoring started with a leadoff homerun in the sixth, touching off a 5-run frame.
Brewers ace Freddy Peralta, who picked up his MLB-best 16th victory, said postgame that Monasterio’s blast energized the entire team. In fact, he joked, the typically light-hitting infielder is getting too big for his britches.
Granted limited reps through the first two-thirds of the season, Monasterio has done almost all of his damage in the month of August. In that span, the 28-year-old is batting .391/.417/.739 with three homeruns, seven doubles and 10 RBIs in just 49 at-bats. Since Ortiz went out, Monasterio has gone on a nine-game hit streak and flexed near nightly pop.
Yesterday’s example came off Blue Jays ace Shane Bieber, a rude unraveling to just his second start of the season. The Brewers piled on four more runs after Monsterio’s homerun, knocking Bieber from the game after five and a third.
Endowed with fresh run support, Peralta polished off Blue Jays batters in the bottom half and finished his night going six shutout innings. The start put the final touches on Peralta’s dominant Pitcher of the Month case.
Afterward, he broke into a grin when asked about Monasterio’s offense-igniting swing. “It’s really good, and fun. You know, now he thinks he’s a homer guy,” Peralta said. After recovering from a bout of giggles, he continued, “But I’m really happy for him, and he gave us the lead, so that’s really important for me, especially how Bieber was looking. He was looking sharp.”
The long ball was Monasterio’s fourth this season, giving him as many in under 100 at-bats as he had in over 400 during his first two years in the big leagues. With Ortiz likely ready to return after a minimum 10-day absence, if his backup keeps hitting like Monasterio has, the Brewers might be wise not to rush the incumbent starter back on his feet right away.
