The New York Mets continued their poor start to the 2026 campaign with a 2-4 loss on Saturday to drop the three-game series against the Chicago Cubs. While the team is not performing to its potential with the bat, the starting rotation has also been a major concern. The Mets are now on a 10-game losing streak with injuries also becoming an issue in the early stages of the season.

In their first major change to the roster, the New York Mets announced Tobias Myers will be their starting pitcher against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. David Peterson was the scheduled starter at Wrigley Field. However, the Mets took him out of the rotation after a couple of rough outings. Myers will swap his bullpen role with Peterson.

“In place of struggling lefty David Peterson, an All-Star last season, right-hander Tobias Myers is set to start Sunday’s game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field,” Will Sammon of The Athletic reported. “Peterson is available in the bullpen, people familiar with the Mets’ plans said.”

Peterson was an All-Star last season but suffered a drastic dip in performance, posting a 6.84 ERA in his last 12 starts. The 30-year-old southpaw enjoyed a solid season debut this year before allowing 20 base hits and 14 earned runs in his next three outings.

Mets Move Veteran Infielder to 10-Day IL

With Juan Soto on the sidelines due to injury, the New York Mets suffered another blow to their lineup. They placed veteran infielder Jorge Polanco on the 10-day IL with a right wrist contusion after undergoing MRI scans on Thursday.

“It’s a bone bruise,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters. “When doctors first took a look at him, it looked like he got hit by a pitch when he didn’t. In talking to him, it was just a couple of swings that he took [Tuesday] night.”

“He didn’t think much of it. It just got worse the following day. Just have to let it calm down a little bit and go from there. We don’t have a timetable [for his return].”

Polanco is off to a slow start to the season after joining the Mets on a two-year, $20 million deal this winter. The 32-year-old had a .179/.246/.286 slash line with four extra-base hits and two RBIs after his previous appearance for the team on Tuesday.
