New York Yankees Finally Get Good Injury News

The New York Yankees received some welcome news on the injury front as they wrapped up a weekend series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Outfielder Spencer Jones sat out Saturday’s 5-3 loss after jamming his heel earlier in the week against Minnesota, but the issue does not appear serious and he remains available if needed, the Yankees’ injury report read.

Jones, in his first major-league season, has given the Yankees a useful bat while they navigate the stretch run without Aaron Judge. The 23-year-old is hitting .248 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs in 80 games.

Losing him for any extended period would have been another blow for a club already missing its biggest star. Instead, the official injury report listed Jones as available off the bench.

Jones himself downplayed the problem, saying it does not require a trip to the injured list. The Yankees now have a decision to make heading into Sunday’s series finale.

They could slot him back into the lineup immed

iately or give him one more day to let the heel settle, especially with a series against Tampa Bay beginning Tuesday. Three full days of rest might be the cautious play as New York tries to stay healthy for October.

The timing matters because the Yankees are again heading toward a Wild Card berth. At 89-65 they sit five games behind the Rays in the American League East.

Judge landed back on the injured list with a right calf strain and has said his goal is to return for the postseason.

The 10-day IL stint lines up with the final days of the regular season, though he has offered no firm timetable and acknowledged the location of this strain has made it more troublesome than previous ones he has played through.

With Judge sidelined, Jones’ presence in the outfield and middle of the order carries extra weight.

A jammed heel is the kind of nagging issue that can linger if rushed, so the organization is treating it carefully even while expressing optimism.

Sunday’s game against Arizona offers the first chance to see whether Jones is ready to return. If he sits again, it will likely be a precaution rather than a sign of a larger problem.

The Yankees need bodies who can contribute immediately if they hope to make noise in October, and so far the latest update on their young outfielder points in a positive direction.
