The New York Yankees are in the midst of a playoff push as the team is beginning a 12-game stretch against playoff teams. These are games they need to win and look sharp at, and getting on the board early is critical. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm has been performing well and reached a career milestone in a major way on Tuesday night against the Houston Astros. Let’s take a closer look at what he was able to do to help the New York Yankees this time.
The New York Yankees need to make sure they are scoring runs as well as they have been this year in order to take pressure off the pitching staff. Jazz Chisholm was able to step up in a major way in his first at-bat of Tuesday’s game in the second inning. With a runner on first base and one out, Houston Astros starting pitcher Framber Valdez threw a sinker that stayed up in the strike zone, and Chisholm was able to crush it over the right field wall for a home run.
That home run was the 500th career hit for the second baseman and was the 27th homer of the season. However, he has not done too well hitting for power against southpaw pitching as that was just the third home run off one this season. Chisholm has been one of the better hitters in the majors this season as he has 27 home runs and 25 stolen bases this season, despite missing a month earlier this season with an oblique strain.
The New York Yankees have been one of the best offensive teams this season in a majority of categories this year and having players like Chisholm step up has been able to keep the lineup flowing. It will be interesting to see if he can get to that 30 home run/30 stolen base season despite missing that time. He has been a versatile player and has added energy to the New York Yankees that has bolstered them into a top team in Major League Baseball since arriving at last year’s MLB Trade Deadline.
