The San Diego Padres are beginning a new series on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles. Having dropped two of three to the Minnesota Twins, San Diego is looking to get back on track against another bottom-tier American League team.
Just 61-76, Baltimore is last in the AL East standings. This presents the 76-61 Padres an opportunity to get back in the win column and keep pace with the Los Angeles Dodgers who own a two-game lead atop the NL West.
That said, the Padres were dealt an unfortunate development just hours before first pitch as Fernando Tatis Jr. was removed from the lineup.
Exiting Sunday's game against the Twins in the eighth inning, Tatis spoke with reporters in the clubhouse about what has been some tightness in his right hamstring. However, the three-time All-Star downplayed the issue, saying he would be in the lineup Monday.
"A little tightness, nothing crazy," he said via the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee.
While he was indeed in Monday's lineup, originally slated to leadoff and play right field, Tatis was scratched per an announcement from the team.

Given Tatis' comments about expecting to play on Monday, there was immediate concern from the fanbase when his name was scratched from the lineup. However, shortly after that announcement, the Padres shared some encouraging news on the nature of this ailment.
Marty Caswell of The Sporting Tribune wrote on X, "Padres say Fernando Tatis was fighting to play through the lower half tightness but removed today for 'precautionary reasons.' He's a late scratch with Ramon Laureano moving to RF and Bryce Johnson, not Jackson Merrill, going to CF."
With this wording, there seems to be minimal concern about a longterm absence. However, the Padres will be without their superstar outfielder for at least the series opener against Baltimore.
