Remillard and Burger Shine in White Sox Comeback Win
Matt Marton-USA TODAY Sports

The St. Louis Cardinals overcame the early struggles of Chicago White Sox starter Dylan Cease. The Cards staked starter Jordan Montgomery a five-run lead, but the lefty exited with one out in the fifth. White Sox hitters took advantage of a wild St. Louis bullpen to come back and sneak away with a one-run victory.

Dylan Cease's uneven season continued in last night's start against the Cardinals. Cease completed six innings without a walk but labored early on. He allowed eleven hits in the outing. Cease needed 52 pitches to get through the second and third inning, where the Cardinals took advantage of his command issues.

Shaky Cease

Doubles by Jordan Walker and Ivan Herrera got the Cardinals on the board in the second. They added a second run on Dylan Carlson's single and poured on three more runs in the third. Cease surrendered a two-run homer to Nolan Arenado. Herrera reached on an infield single with two outs that plated Nolan Gorman, who singled after Arenado's homer.

Remillard Burger

Jake Burger opened the scoring for the White Sox in the fifth with a solo homer, and Zach Remillard doubled in the following at-bat to chase Mongomery. The South Siders erupted in the sixth with a crooked number on the Cardinals’ bullpen. Tim Anderson's reached on an infield single and scored on Andrew Vaughn's double.

St. Louis made another pitching change but failed to make an impact. Andre Pallante hit Yasmani Grandal to load the bases for Burger, who doubled home two runs. Remillard followed with his second hit, a two-run single to put the White Sox ahead 6-5.

Keynan Middleton relieved Cease in the seventh and received a rude greeting from St. Louis. Arenado unloaded for his second two-run homer of the game that scored Lars Nootbar, who led off the inning with a single. The lead didn't last long, as All-Star and Home Run Derby participant Luis Robert Jr. tied the game at seven with a solo homer.

Cardinals reliever Kyle Leahy walked the bases loaded with two outs before being relieved by Chris Stratton, who walked in the go-ahead run. The Pale Hose didn't add to the lead, but fortunately, Gregory Santos and Kendall Graveman locked down the win with shaky but scoreless innings.
