Watch: Yankees' Anthony Volpe showcases improved swing on HR

New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe is tweaking his swing in spring training. The change could be paying dividends.

In the top of the fifth inning of Sunday's matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals, Volpe crushed an 83 mph slider from pitcher Michael McGreevy. The 355-foot dinger gave New York a 5-3 lead.

The Yankees lost to the Cardinals 6-5, but Volpe went 2-of-3 at the plate.

Volpe has had a slow start in spring training. In 25 at-bats, the 23-year-old has five hits, two home runs and a subpar .200 batting average.

Volpe, however, has indicated he's trying to be more aggressive at the plate. When he starts making contact with the ball, his numbers should improve.

"I want to take care of the strike zone a lot more," Volpe said in February, per MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. "When I do that, I feel like I can impact the ball a lot better and just take my natural, normal swing, which I feel plays. But when I get too big or too outside the strike zone, no one hits those pitches."

If Volpe's hitting continues to improve, that would give the Yankees lineup a needed jolt. On Saturday, New York designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton said if he undergoes surgery for injuries in his elbows, it may be season-ending, via Hoch.
