The New York Yankees are preparing for the 2025 campaign, and even though spring training is just getting underway, they are already dealing with some injury woes. Perhaps the most notable player to get bitten by the injury bug is designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, with the Yankees providing an update on his status on Saturday.

Stanton has dealt with his fair share of injuries throughout his career, as he's missed at least 48 games in each of the past three seasons. Things haven't gotten off to a great start for him this year, as he was forced to return to New York earlier on Monday, Feb. 24 as he deals with tendinitis in both of his elbows.

"Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton has returned to New York to undergo medical testing, multiple outlets reported Monday. Stanton, 35, has yet to take part in spring training activities in Tampa, Fla., as he continues to battle tendinitis in both elbows. The New York Post said Monday that it was unclear whether the medical testing was for an evaluation of his elbows," ESPN reported.

With Stanton yet to start participating in spring training activities before heading back to New York, his status for Opening Day appeared to be in serious jeopardy. Sure enough, the Yankees announced that Stanton will begin the season on the injured list, although he is expected to rejoin the team in Tampa at some point next week.

"Giancarlo Stanton will begin the season on the IL, Yankees announce. Received a PRP injection in both elbows while back in NY to tend to (a) personal matter. Expected to return to Tampa this coming week," Greg Joyce of the New York Post shared in a post on X.

Stanton didn't have his greatest season for the Yankees in 2024 (.233 batting average, 27 home runs, 72 runs batted in), but he played a key role in supporting Aaron Judge and Juan Soto in the team's high-powered lineup.

With Stanton set to miss the start of the year now, though, New York will need to work on finding a proper replacement for him at designated hitter. The Yankees open their 2025 campaign on March 27 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
