Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov shared one of the most notable and controversial rivalries in UFC history.

This past Saturday, Tony Ferguson emotionally snapped his eight fight losing streak when he scored a stoppage victory over ‘Salt Papi’ at Misfits Boxing 22.

‘El Cucuy’s’ losing streak came during his time in the UFC and it began in 2020 when he fought Justin Gaethje for the interim lightweight title.

However, throughout his UFC tenure, the thing that fans remember Ferguson most for, is his rivalry with the consensus greatest lightweight of all time, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Ferguson and Khabib traded barbs during phone call ahead of UFC 209

In 2017, ‘El Cucuy’ became the interim lightweight champion after picking up a win against Kevin Lee, after Khabib pulled out of the fight due to weight cut complications.

And after that, he and Khabib were matched up for the fourth time at UFC 223 where they were scheduled to clash for the vacant lightweight title.

Ahead of their scheduled clash, Khabib and Ferguson hilariously traded barbs during a UFC 223 conference call, which ascended into chaos.

“You have a fake belt, Tony, you have a fake belt,” Khabib told Ferguson.

“A fake belt, that s— looks real to me. All those belts that you got and people floating your boat and all those Reebok sponsorships, that’s the s— I don’t give a f— about,” Ferguson replied.

“Now you talk about Reebok because these guys don’t give you contract? Now you’re jealous?” Khabib began to laugh at Ferguson.

“I can ask Reebok to give you a contract if you want, they make very good shoes I can order for you. What size are you so I can order for you?” Khabib laughed at the interim champion.

“I can’t even hear you, I’m working out right now,” Ferguson said as he seemingly continued a workout mid phone call.

Tony Ferguson credits taking a break for his recent win

Fans were extremely skeptical when Ferguson was booked to fight on Misfits boxing because of his recent losing streak.

Despite that, the 41-year-old took over a year off, which is rare for Ferguson who has always been an extremely active fighter.

And following his bounce back win, the former UFC star credited taking time off for his win, stating that he finally found eternal happiness.
