A lot of players in the NBA try to find success for the lucrative benefits that come with it. For many stars, the NBA presents the best opportunity for them to provide a great life for their family and friends, as it is one of the most financially rewarding leagues in the world today.
And one player reaped the benefits of that. That player was Chandler Parsons. Parsons was never expected to be a superstar in the league, as he was only a second-round pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. But he proved to be an effective role player for the Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks.
Parsons' performance must have impressed someone in Memphis, as they signed him in 2016 for a whopping 4 years and $94 million. This would mean he earned $23.5 million per season. Many at the time felt it was a lot of money for a player who didn't have as high a ceiling as the money warranted.
But Parsons had a humorous response to it online. Recently, former Grizzlies executive John Hollinger jokingly responded to a viral Tweet that asked people what is a story from their life that sounds made up, as he mentioned his 2016 spending spree, in which he signed Parsons.
In response to this Tweet, Parsons jokingly thanked the former Grizzlies front office member. While fans may not like it, Parsons got a great payday out of it. And if he had turned down that contract, Parsons could have ended up on the list of players who turned down big contracts and then ended up regretting it.
Parsons was only in Memphis for 3 years, as he was traded to the Hawks in 2019. He only got to play 5 games, as he endured a tragic accident that caused him significant injuries. While he has not formally retired, there is no expectation for Parsons to return to the NBA anytime soon.
