Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell took a step back during the regular season. He received a greater reward.
While the Cavs didn’t get nearly as far as they hoped during the playoffs, there’s no denying that Mitchell was fantastic all the way through. As usual.
And this season, Mitchell was rewarded with First Team All-NBA honors. The announcement was made Friday, and anyone who follows pro basketball will tell you Mitchell got exactly what he deserved.
He joins league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Thunder), Nikola Jokic (Nuggets), Jayson Tatum (Celtics), and Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks) on the first team.
But wait — there’s more. Cavs power forward Evan Mobley was named Second Team All-NBA after what was truly a career season under first-year coach Kenny Atkinson.

Given how the Cavs finished 64-18, it’s no surprise they deserved these honors. It’s even nicer that they’re getting them.
Mitchell was named an All-Star for the sixth straight season and averaged 24.0 points in the regular season and 29.6 points in the playoffs. He was more brilliant as the game got bigger.
Mobley was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first player in franchise history to receive the award. He made his first All-Star appearance and finished the season with averages of 18.5 points on 55.7 percent shooting from the field, including 37.0 percent from three-point range, along with 9.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

Mobley was joined on the Second Team by Jalen Brunson (Knicks), Anthony Edwards (Timberwolves), Stephen Curry (Warriors) and LeBron James (Lakers).
This marks only the third time that two Cavaliers have earned All-NBA honors in the same season, following Mark Price and Brad Daugherty in 1991-92 and James and Kyrie Irving in 2014-15.
