At 41 years old, LeBron James is rewriting how a veteran performs in the postseason. And it recently led the Lakers’ assistant coach, Derek Fisher, to compare ‘King James’ to the legendary Magic Johnson.
The Lakers defeated the in-form Houston Rockets 107-98 in Game 1 of the playoffs, where LeBron finished the game with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting, 8 rebounds, and 13 assists. Besides this, ‘LBJ’s’ effectiveness as a playmaker got Fisher drawing the Magic-Johnson comparison.
Speaking on the Spectrum SportsNet Live post-game show on April 19, Fisher said, “We could say this is his Magic Johnson era right now. You can still win championships with a guy like him leading the charge.”

Fisher stated that James still finishes many plays above the rim. The focus now is clearly on high-IQ playmaking. The Lakers’ No. 23 picks his spots carefully. He relies on low jump hooks and mid-post turnaround jumpers when he needs a bucket.
Both James and Johnson stand at 6-foot-9, with the former currently transitioning to playmaking like the latter. Johnson was the ultimate pass-first leader. He used to lead the games by feeding teammates and scoring whenever given a chance.
Besides the comparison, Fisher made it clear that the shift is not a downgrade for James. It is a smart choice at this stage of his journey. Magic was the leader of the Showtime dynasty of the 1980s. Today, LeBron is the face of the modern franchise. So, Fisher’s comparison isn’t an ambiguous one.
Additionally, the appreciation they have for each other also stands as a common factor between the two.
Back in 2012, James openly praised Magic’s approach to the game. He stated that he preferred Magic’s leadership style. He valued the ability to involve teammates and always have their backs.
Even Magic has consistently praised James over the years. In 2020, Magic called him the best all-around player of all time. He praised James for passing his assist records in 2022. He also congratulated James in March 2026 for breaking the all-time field goals record.
The Lakers now hold a 1-0 series lead over the Rockets. They achieved this opening victory through a balanced team effort, which also included James’ worthy contribution.
The 41-year-old’s performances are showing that when an all-time great decides to trust the system over his own scoring, the rest of the teams face a significant problem.
So, do you think this new version of LeBron James is enough to bring another title to Los Angeles?
