“You got to see all of these guys, all of my teammates, grow,” Brown said. “I got to see them overcome adversity as a group, up close and personal. … Obviously, we’re not satisfied with the result. If it sounds like an excuse, it’s not. But to fight and maneuver through adversity and grow, and galvanize with a bunch of guys and to have that mindset and approach, this was my favorite year.

“I wouldn’t say by far. By far would be a stretch because obviously winning the championship is great. But I’m telling y’all, this was my favorite season.” This had to make Celtics fans queasy in the stomach after Brown won a Championship in 2024, the Celtics’ league-leading 18^th Championship. It makes you think back to when Kobe Bryant wanted to win a Championship without Shaq. It felt like Brown felt fulfilled being the leader without Tatum for most of the season.

How Boston just made a trade that they did not get the value expected for Brown and made it worse by sending Brown to an Atlantic Division rival in the Philadelphia 76ers, a proverbial non-negotiable in general manager 101: trading a star player to a division rival you have to face frequently. The Celtics only received an unprotected 1^st round pick or swap, depending on where it lands, and a pair of second-round picks and an injury-prone Paul George. 

What to Make of the Celtics New Look

Clearly, with new ownership, the Celtics wanted to offload a max contract and get under the second apron of the salary cap, trading away Jaylen Brown. The Celtics accomplished manipulation of the salary cap but did not get better in a new look Eastern Conference that improved within the Atlantic Division the Celtics compete within with Brown and LeBron James in Philadelphia the frontrunners to win the Eastern Conference Division with the 76ers.
