Drew Timme Reacts to Tweet from Kendrick Perkins After 30 Point Performance

Drew Timme is playing in the NBA Summer League for a third straight year, and college basketball fans are no doubt getting flashbacks to the Gonzaga legend's historic career in Spokane.

Timme dropped a game-high 30 points on Sunday for the Brooklyn Nets, dazzling the crowd with a between the legs pass followed shortly by a poster dunk over 2024 No. 2 overall pick Alex Sarr.

While Timme could not will Brooklyn to a win over Washington, the crowd had seen enough to start an 'MVP' chant for the three-time All-American, who chose to play in Las Vegas even after signing a standard NBA contract late last season.

Timme's performance caught the attention of ESPN analyst and former NBA big man Kendrick Perkins as well.

“Drew Timme should be on some body roster getting quality minutes!!!!” Perkins tweeted in the second half. “And I mean in the rotation heavy.”

Timme was told about the tweet in postgame interviews, and while he acknowledged the nice words, he was quick to point out the media hasn't always felt this way about him.

"That hasn’t quite been the narrative I’d say since I left college, that I can play in the league and deserve a spot or whatever," Timme said. “To kind of see that narrative change, it’s good because you’ve seen what people say about you earlier.”

Timme helped quiet the doubters with a strong regular season performance in the G-League last season - including a monster 50 point game which helped him earn his first call to the NBA where he averaged 12.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in nine games.

The 6'10 big man should get a chance to prove himself with a more regular role in Brooklyn this season. However, the Nets made a whopping five first round picks in June, including center Danny Wolf, giving Timme some serious competition as he looks to build on last year's momentum.

So far through two games, Timme is averaging 26 points, good for second in the NBA Summer League and first among players who have played multiple games.

Timme is one of four former Zags who played in summer league on Sunday, joining Khalif Battle (seven points), Anton Watson (three points), and Ben Gregg (one rebound) who suited up for Phoenix, New York, and Boston, respectively.
