Ex-Jazzman and fan-favorite Ricky Rubio is retiring from the NBA. On Wednesday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Rubio and the Cleveland Cavaliers agreed to a buyout and that news was followed up with an announcement that the well-traveled veteran is calling it quits after an admirable career.
His contract ran through the 2024-25 season, with 12.5 million owed between the next two years. Rubio had stepped away from the Cavaliers in August to focus on his mental health.
Rubio arrived in Salt Lake City for the 2017-18 season in a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for a first-round pick. Even though he only spent two years in Utah, the impact he made on the community and the court won’t be forgotten.
Rubio, who lost his mother to lung cancer in 2016, was an integral part of the 5 For the Flight Organization that placed its name on Jazz uniforms, which raised money for cancer research. Utah Jazz fans may also remember when Rubio flew cancer patient Luca de la Vega to Salt Lake City to be Utah’s ball boy versus the New York Knicks.
Rubio had his moments on the court, but injuries during playoff runs were an issue during his short stint as Utah’s starting point guard. In his two years with the Jazz, Rubio averaged 12.9 points while dishing out 5.7 assists.
Although he never made an All-Star team, Rubio had an impressive stat line, including seven career triple-doubles, a 7.4 career assist average, and 1.8 steals per game. Undoubtedly, Rubio will always be remembered as a Jazzman here in Salt Lake City.
