Longtime NBA coach Frank Vogel has agreed to become the associate head coach of the Warriors, ESPN’s Shams Charania tweets. Marc Stein reported earlier (Twitter link) that Vogel was poised to join Steve Kerr’s staff.
Vogel has carved out an extensive career as a head and assistant coach in the league that began in 2001. Vogel began his career as an assistant with Boston, Philadelphia and Indiana before serving as the Pacers’ head coach from 2011-16. He also had a stint as Orlando’s head coach from 2016-18 before he was hired by the Lakers as their head coach from 2019-22. Vogel won a championship with Los Angeles during the COVID year of 2020.
Vogel was also the Suns’ head coach but only lasted the 2023/24 season. Vogel then became a “coaching consultant” with the Mavericks under Jason Kidd and then joined Kidd’s staff as an assistant. Vogel was not retained after Kidd was replaced by former Michigan coach Dusty May this offseason.
Kerr needed help at the front of the bench after both Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse departed after last season.
