How LeBron James has ignited Philadelphia 76ers ticket prices

LeBron James is going to send ticket prices soaring at the Xfinity Mobile Arena.

James’ surprise move to the 76ers was confirmed last Friday. The 41-year-old, the NBA’s all-time record point scorer, has ended an eight-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers to retire in Philadelphia.

“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energise a new fanbase and start this incredible journey one last time,” James – who has won Championships with the Lakers, Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers – said in a statement.

Commercially, securing James to a two-season, $4m-a-year veteran contract – a $48m fall in the value of his last Lakers contract, the biggest pay cut in NBA history – is big business.

As well as being able to expect a boom in jersey and merchandise sales, the 76ers will now have carte blanche to charge more for tickets, as will the ticket brokers who sell through resale sites.

And even with James two months out from making his 76ers bow, the early data illustrates just how lucrative his signing will be for franchise owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer.

The Lakers’ two preseason games against Boston Celtics in October have already risen in price, despite the fact there are no guarantees that James will even take to the court in either.

As relayed by Philly Voice, the cheapest available tickets for the first of those games is now $283, a 316 per cent upswing on the average price for a 7ers game in the regular season.

And while slightly more modest tickets have emerged on various resale sites, the trajectory has been up and to the right since the news of James’ move broke.

Similarly, 76ers’ merchandise partners Fanatics have almost reached sell-out point on all James-branded merchandise.
