‘Iron sharpens iron…’ How LeBron James inspired Luka Doncic’s body transformation

Slovenian and LA Lakers coach explained how Luka Doncic learned how to take care of himself from LeBron James.

The Los Angeles Lakers have arguably the most exciting one-two punch in the NBA, with LeBron James and Luka Doncic holding the titles of their two best players.

It’s clear that the Lakers have decided to prioritize Doncic over James going forward. And in fairness to them, the Slovenian superstar has shown a true willingness to be the next franchise star.

Doncic signed a $165 million extension with the Lakers this summer. And on top of that, Luka has gotten in unbelievable shape to further his career with the team.

While Doncic claims he just wanted to be his best self and wasn’t motivated by any other factors, one LA Lakers and Slovenian head coach has suggested otherwise.

Luka Doncic took fitness motivation from LeBron James

According to LA Lakers and Slovenian assistant coach Greg St. Jean, Luka Doncic’s recent transformation came about because of LeBron James’ influence.

St. Jean told BasketNews that seeing a player like James, who is renowned for his work ethic, has rubbed off, not just on Doncic, but also on the rest of the Lakers this offseason.

“You know what? I always find this: iron sharpens iron. When you’re around really good players, it’s just like when you’re a coach, and you’re around a really good coach. You can’t help but be motivated to continue to get better at your craft.

“I think Luka’s learned a little bit from every great player he’s been around. And I know he’s always looked up to LeBron.

“He’s always been somebody he’s really admired. So I think having those two together is obviously motivating. I think it’s two-way motivating as well. I don’t think it’s just a one-way street.

“I think LeBron, you can see, is working really hard as well. He’s up at 5 a.m., and he’s working on his body as well.

“So, I think our team and our players — it’s not just about those two guys — but I think everybody’s motivated to come back and have a really good season.”

LeBron James could leave the keys to the LA Lakers with Luka Doncic

While Luka Doncic might admire LeBron James greatly, that isn’t necessarily going to impact the latter’s future with the Los Angeles Lakers.

James opted in to his $52.6 million Lakers player option this summer, a stark shift from his annual practice of opting out and signing a new contract with the Lakers.

James didn’t want to sour his Lakers relationship, which is why he didn’t make any overt trade demands or create any kind of turmoil.

Reports emerged that the Lakers are ready to let LeBron walk in free agency. If this is to be the last season of Luka Doncic and LeBron James playing together, this could be a passing of the torch.
