The Phoenix Suns were one of the NBA’s most disappointing teams of the 2024-25 season. With Mat Ishbia’s investment, many thought the Suns would do well. Unfortunately, they became one of the league’s worst teams.
For two seasons, the Phoenix Suns attempted to build around a trio of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal. It was a fantastic partnership on paper, but it only led to the Suns becoming a disappointing team in the Western Conference.
The Suns have become an even more ambitious team since Mat Ishbia bought the team in 2022. With one of his first moves as owner, he acquired Durant, which led to great expectations.
Unfortunately, that did not work out, which has led people like Kendrick Perkins to be critical of the franchise. The team is now focused on building around Booker, but their previous moves did not lead to optimism.
Perkins has always been vocal about the NBA and the Suns. He did not like what they did over the past two seasons, but he has taken that to the next level. In the latest episode of the Road Trippin’ podcast, alongside Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye, Perkins called the Suns an embarrassment.
I honestly could not have imaged a worse start to the Mat Ishbia tenure than what we’ve seen. https://t.co/SCxGeIRB1A

He did not stop at calling them embarrassing. Perkins made sure to hammer the point that the Suns are the biggest embarrassment in the league. He is firing shots at the franchise and Ishbia for how they have been run. This has also led to a more dangerous reputation for the franchise.
With the Suns picking a new direction, some people already want Booker to leave the team. However, Booker appears to be committed to the project that Ishbia is leading.
“One could argue, or one could say that the Phoenix Suns have been the biggest embarrassment in the NBA over the last three to four years,” Perkins said on Road Trippin’.
“Where they were, what four or five years ago. NBA Finals, culture, Monty Williams, CP3, just got dominated by Giannis. To all of a sudden, you trade your number one pick in DeAndre Ayton, who you took in that draft.”
“You give up a Cam Johnson, you give up a Mikal Bridges. Where is KD at now? You acquire Bradley Beal, who is making a whole lot of money with no trade clause. You run through two championship coaches.”
As the Suns play in the competitive Western Conference, they will face obstacles. Most people do not regard them as a contender, considering Durant left to join the Houston Rockets. They lack the star power beyond Booker, which limits their ceiling.
Mat Ishbia calls out NBA experts for sleeping on the Suns next season

“I'm not worried about what the so-called experts think. They had us as a title contender the past two years and were wrong then.” pic.twitter.com/oTDNnI5MbE
They had a strong team in 2022, having reached the NBA Finals the previous year, in 2021. However, Ishbia wanted the big name, so they traded Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson to the Brooklyn Nets for Durant.
The Suns would have a strong foundation even without Durant. Unfortunately, they went through with the trade. They doubled down on their moves with the Beal trade with the Washington Wizards.
While Perkins’ comments can be outrageous, he is calling out Ishbia for flying too close to the sun with his decisions, especially Beal’s bad exit and Durant’s blockbuster trade.
