Success in basketball isn’t always about winning rings. Sometimes, it’s also about the people who had a great impact on the game, and that’s how the Bucks’ Doc Rivers earned one of the most prestigious honors in the sport.
The current head coach of the Bucks was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a key member of the Class of 2026. The full class was formally announced on April 4, 2026, during a special broadcast on ESPN2.
With this induction, Rivers officially joins an elite list of coaches. His name now sits next to icons like Red Auerbach, Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, and John Wooden.
Rivers was voted in through the standard committee process after being named a North American Committee finalist earlier in 2026. When named a finalist, Rivers said, “I don’t do well with awards and accomplishments. It’s never been anything about me.”
But to understand why the Hall of Fame called his name now, you just have to look at the huge coaching resume he built over the years.
Rivers has directed the Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Milwaukee Bucks. He ranks 6th all-time in regular-season coaching wins with around 1,192 victories with over 2,053 appearances.
Rivers has led his teams to the playoffs 21 times across 27 seasons. He has secured 114 playoff wins, which ranks 4th in NBA history. He reached the NBA Finals twice with the Celtics, winning the 2008 championship and returning to the Finals again in 2010.
Rivers won the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2000 and was later named one of the NBA’s Top 15 Coaches in History during the league’s 75th anniversary celebration. He has also been trusted to coach the NBA All-Star Game four times in 2008, 2011, 2021, and 2024.
Rivers is currently in his third season leading the Milwaukee Bucks. He took over the team in January 2024 and signed a multi-year deal reportedly worth around $40 million. The fact that this honor comes while he is still actively coaching the Bucks makes it even more special.
