The New York Knicks are ready to commit long-term to one of their stars; however, they want to protect their future.

The New York Knicks have made some massive strides in terms of improving their roster next season. It’s clear they want to improve on their Eastern Conference Finals run from this spring.

To do so, they took some drastic steps, including firing Tom Thibodeau as Knicks head coach. It was later announced that the Knicks appointed Mike Brown as his successor.

Along with that, they’ve made signings, with the Knicks landing Guerschon Yabusele from their rivals. But they’ve also secured their roster with long-term deals, signing Mikal Bridges to a $150 million extension.

But Bridges isn’t the only player who could see his long-term future secured with the New York Knicks, as another star could receive an extension.

New York Knicks open to team-friendly extension for Mitchell Robinson

James L. Edwards put forward a report recently for The Athletic about the New York Knicks. When discussing the future of Mitchell Robinson, Edwards reported on some surprising plans.

He believes that the Knicks, despite Mitchell Robinson’s injury issues, will offer him a new contract, provided that it is a team-friendly deal.

“The Knicks know Robinson better than anyone, and he’s been unable to stay on the court due to various injuries.

“I’ve gotten the sense that New York would be willing to sign Robinson to a team-friendly extension that covers them in the event he continues to get hurt.”

“On the flip side, I’m sure Robinson points to his performances in the postseason and believes he can get one more nice deal from the Knicks or someone else if he’s able to stay healthy in a contract year.”

New York Knicks ready to make title push next season

If the New York Knicks lock down Mitchell Robinson for the foreseeable future, then their franchise will have their core roster set for the next few years.

Robinson might have his injury issues, but when he is healthy, like he was for the latter half of last season and the playoffs, he can be a valuable contributor.

In the eyes of many, the Knicks are the strongest team in the Eastern Conference. And while other teams, namely the Cleveland Cavaliers, are capable of competing with them, the Knicks are perhaps the most battle-tested team when it comes to the playoffs.

If Mike Brown is able to get things right next season, there is no reason why the Knicks can’t emerge from the Eastern Conference and reach the NBA Finals.
