This is brutal news for Paul George and the Sixers, who missed the playoffs last season for the first time since 2017.
George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey appeared in only 15 games together in 2024-25. Philadelphia finished last season with a record of 24-58.
The Sixers signed George to a massive four-year, $211 million contract last summer. George will make $51.7 million next season and $54.1 million in 2026-27. The swingman has a player option worth $56.6 million for the 2027-28 season.
George played in 41 games last season. He averaged 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 43.0% from the field, 35.8% from beyond the arc and 81.4% from the free-throw line.
Philadelphia went 15-26 when George played.
A California native, George has played for the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers and Sixers. He has career averages of 20.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists.
George, 35, has never reached the NBA Finals.
The Sixers had the third pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and selected VJ Edgecombe out of Baylor. Johni Broome was selected by Philadelphia with the 35th overall pick.
Kyle Lowry and Eric Gordon re-signed with the Sixers in free agency, but Guerschon Yabusele left the team for the New York Knicks.
Philadelphia did sign Trendon Watford, who spent the last two seasons with the Brooklyn Nets, and Andre Drummond and Kelly Oubre Jr. picked up their player options.
