Oklahoma City Thunder Point Guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a spectacular performance in OKC’s Game 7 win yesterday afternoon. Gilgeous-Alexander had received some criticism in this series after a photo of him smiling after the Thunder’s Game 3 loss on May 9. Whether it was a reaction to the loss that put the Thunder down 2-1 at the time, or a display of confidence, it worked out for the Thunder in the end.
SGA had a breakout Game 7 performance. He scored 35 points, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 3 rebounds in 36 minutes. He also shot an impressive 75% from three-point range, 88% from the free throw line, and a 63% field goal percentage. Those are the type of numbers a superstar like him is expected to put up when the lights are the brightest.
The Thunder played a complete team game, but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way, proving why he’s one of the best leaders in the NBA, but also one of the best players in the league.
The Oklahoma City Thunder will have their hands full when they face off against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Conference Finals. They’ll have to contain Anthony Edwards, who is right up there with SGA as one of the most dynamic and game-changing players. The Timberwolves and Thunder matchup will be one of, if not the most exciting, series of the playoffs so far. A faceoff of two of the best players in the league, tons of role players who have the ability to take over the game, and a battle of premier defenders. It is going to be fun to watch Alex Caruso and Rudy Gobert go at it on the defensive side of the ball.
After the Thunder won Game 7, they were celebrating the win, and Chet Holmgren had some high praise for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Holmgren said, ” You know who this is? The MVP.” It’s hard to argue with Holmgren’s claim, given Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s regular season and postseason performance so far.
The Thunder are a team that has each other’s backs and believes in each other, which will go a long way in the playoffs. With this type of belief in each other, they’re going to be a tough opponent against the Timberwolves.
SGA and the Thunder have every right to be confident, but they have to turn their celebrations into focus quickly. Game 1 of the Conference Finals is tomorrow night in Oklahoma City.
