The Atlanta Hawks just turned this first-round series on its head.
After dropping Game 1, the Hawks walked into Madison Square Garden on Monday night and stunned the New York Knicks 107-106 in Game 2, evening the series at 1-1. Atlanta trailed by 12 entering the fourth quarter and was still down eight with about five minutes left, but the Hawks completely flipped the game late with a 28-15 final period.

CJ McCollum was the reason everything changed. He finished with 32 points and six assists, and when the game got tight, he became the calmest player on the floor. He gave Atlanta its first second-half lead with just over two minutes left, then answered Jalen Brunson’s huge three-pointer with another clutch jumper to put the Hawks back in front with 33 seconds remaining.
What made the win even bigger for Atlanta was that it did not come from McCollum alone. Jonathan Kuminga gave the Hawks a massive boost with 19 points off the bench, while Jalen Johnson added 17 points and eight rebounds and Onyeka Okongwu chipped in 15 points and eight boards. Atlanta got enough secondary production to survive one of the toughest playoff environments in basketball.
For New York, this will be a brutal one to swallow. Jalen Brunson had 29 points and seven assists, and Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart, and the rest of the Knicks looked in control for most of the night. The Knicks led by 14 in the third quarter and still carried a double-digit edge into the fourth, but the offense dried up late while Atlanta kept attacking. New York was outscored 28-15 in the final quarter, and that collapse is now the story heading into Game 3.
The ending was pure chaos. McCollum nearly gave the Knicks one last opening when he missed two free throws with 5.6 seconds left, but New York could not finish the escape act. Mikal Bridges missed the potential game-winner at the buzzer, and the Garden went from ready to celebrate to completely stunned in a matter of seconds.
Now the pressure shifts.
Instead of heading to Atlanta up 2-0, the Knicks are in a dead-even series and have lost all of their momentum. The Hawks, meanwhile, suddenly look dangerous. They proved they can survive New York’s physicality, handle the road atmosphere, and trust McCollum to close a playoff game at the highest level. With Game 3 moving to Atlanta on Thursday, this series now feels wide open.
