The Washington Wizards made a number of moves over the weekend and settled on these key transactions before locking in their opening night roster:

The team signed Center John Butler Jr to a two-way contract. Butler Jr filled the third and final, two way spot for Washington as teams can now carry up to three two way players on their roster.

Butler Jr played in 19 games on a two way deal with Portland in 2022-23 averaging 2.4 points per game. The 7’0, 190 lbs center also averaged 8.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks in six games with the Stockton Kings. Butler Jr went undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft before signing a contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. Shortly after training camp with the Pelicans, Butler Jr joined the Trail Blazers.

Fourth year Forward Deni Avdija signed a contract extension after averaging career highs in points, rebounds, and assists.

Wizards General Manager Will Dawkins had this to say about Avdija:

“Deni has many of the characteristics that we value in the players who represent our organization. He has a team-first mentality, works hard on his craft, competes with toughness, and is committed to improving the community. That hard work has resulted in the year-to-year development of his overall game, and we’re excited to have him continue that progress as a Wizard.”

Subsequent moves to lock in the roster resulted in the release of veteran Taj Gibson and Xavier Cooks.
