It certainly seems like the 0-3 New York Giants are preparing to replace starting quarterback Russell Wilson with promising rookie Jaxson Dart ahead of this coming Sunday's home game against the 3-0 Los Angeles Chargers.
While speaking with reporters on Monday, Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton made a request to fans after paying customers at MetLife Stadium booed the offense on multiple occasions and chanted for Dart during the club's 22-9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs this past Sunday night.
"...Give him some time," Slayton said about the Giants possibly turning to Dart this week, per Peter Botte of the New York Post. "Give him some grace. Don’t show up and boo him after a game or two if he doesn’t do well, which I don’t expect him to. …I’m just saying the reality is it might not [happen]. So, if that’s the case, give him time to grow. Give us time to gel. Let him be an NFL quarterback. Let him figure out what that is and learn and grow. …And give him a chance to grow and become a good quarterback."
Slayton previously campaigned for the Giants not to toss Dart "in the fire" early into his debut pro season. However, that was before Wilson played poorly across two of three starts.
Specifically, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News noted that Wilson failed to throw a single touchdown pass in the red zone over the campaign's first three weeks. One can't help but wonder if an awful fourth-quarter red-zone trip against the Chiefs will essentially prove to be the end of Wilson's tenure as Big Blue's QB1.
Meanwhile, Dart completed 32-of-47 passes for 372 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in his three preseason appearances. He also rushed for 52 yards and a score on six carries over those games.
"He's up against one of the better defenses in the NFL," Slayton said about Dart running the scout team on the practice field, according to the Giants' website. "And he's operating. And he's finding ways to complete the passes, navigate the pass rush, those types of things. I think he does that well day in and day out. But from a mental aspect, which I think the majority of quarterback is mental, I think he does a good job of paying attention in those meetings, and he's been attentive and he's prepared himself well."
As of Tuesday morning, ESPN BET had the Giants as 6.5-point home underdogs against the unbeaten Chargers. It could be interesting to see how that line moves, if at all, once Giants head coach Brian Daboll confirms his starting quarterback for that matchup.
