49ers Give Injury Update On Christian McCaffrey
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Ever since the San Francisco 49ers traded for him in late October, Christian McCaffrey has jump-started what was then a struggling offense.

He has given them a superstar in the backfield who can also do double-duty as a receiver, and he was at his best in Sunday’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders by rushing for 121 yards and collecting an additional 72 yards in the air.

Unfortunately, he has an ankle injury, and the team said on Monday that he is considered “day-to-day.”

The 49ers will play the Arizona Cardinals this coming Sunday to close out the regular season, and given that the Cardinals have absolutely nothing to play for, one would expect San Francisco to win even if McCaffrey isn’t able to suit up.

But if he has to miss any type of extended time because of his ankle injury, it would be a huge blow to a team that has serious Super Bowl aspirations.

Prior to his acquisition, the Niners were struggling offensively, as their running game was producing next to nothing, and it was putting a glass ceiling over their passing attack.

But McCaffrey’s arrival has shattered that ceiling.

In 10 games with the 49ers, they have scored at least 30 points six times, a milestone they had reached only once prior to him coming to the Bay Area.

He has become something of a security blanket for head coach Kyle Shanahan, not to mention quarterback Brock Purdy, who replaced an injured Jimmy Garoppolo in Week 13.

On the season, McCaffrey has 1,094 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns, as well as 707 yards and four scores in the air.
