Following a disappointing 2024 season, the San Francisco 49ers are reshuffling their coaching staff.
Coming off an overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII, San Francisco was penciled in as a title contender once again. However, the 49ers slipped to 6-11, the team's most losses in a single season in six years, thanks in large part to a rash of injuries that crippled the roster.
On Tuesday, the 49ers announced a number of staff changes, including two key promotions on offense. Klay Kubiak was bumped up from passing game specialist to offensive coordinator, and Mick Lombardi was moved up from senior offensive assistant to quarterbacks coach, replacing Brian Griese.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan had previously hinted at Kubiak getting moved up during a press conference last month.
"The 49ers – as planned – promoted Klay Kubiak to OC," tweeted Matt Barrows of The Athletic. "To meet the Rooney Rule requirement, they also interviewed minority candidates Noah Pauley (Iowa State) and Junior Adams (Oregon) for the position. Adams has since been hired by the Cowboys as WR coach."
Kubiak, whose brother Klint is the new offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks, is entering his fifth season with the 49ers.
He got started in 2021 as a defensive quality control coach before moving over to become the assistant quarterbacks coach in 2022, a job he held for two seasons.
Lombardi, meanwhile, was hired by San Francisco last year following a two-year stint as the offensive coordinator of the Las Vegas Raiders. He has experience working with quarterbacks as an assistant quarterbacks coach with the New England Patriots in 2019.
Lombardi previously worked for the 49ers in a variety of roles from 2013-16 under Jim Harbaugh, Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly before spending two seasons on staff with the New York Jets.
