49ers pass rush struggles: Is Cashius Howell the solution?

The San Francisco 49ers' pass rush was a major concern this past season, finishing with just 20 total sacks—the fewest in the NFL.

While injuries to defensive end Nick Bosa played a role in those struggles, general manager John Lynch likely expected more consistent pressure after investing heavily in the defensive front. San Francisco used multiple draft picks on defensive linemen and traded for Bryce Huff, yet the results fell short of expectations.

That could prompt the 49ers to invest further in the pass rush in the 2026 NFL Draft.

In his post-Super Bowl mock draft for CBS Sports, Mike Renner projects the 49ers selecting Texas A&M edge rusher Cashius Howell with the No. 27 overall pick.

"Howell is arguably the most skilled pass rusher in the class," Renner wrote. "Limited length and play strength cap his run defense, but pass rush may be all San Francisco needs. Given the run defenders it drafted last year, that tradeoff works."

From a production standpoint, Howell fits the profile of what the 49ers need. He recorded a career-high 11.5 sacks last season, along with 31 tackles (14 for loss), six passes defensed, and one forced fumble. Over the past three seasons, Howell has totaled 25 sacks, including 9.5 in 2023 at Bowling Green before transferring to Texas A&M.

Howell has earned a Pro Football Focus pass-rush grade of at least 90.3 in each of the last three seasons. Additionally, his run-defense grade has also been solid, registering at least 73.6 in each of the past two years.

Known for his explosive first step, Howell would enter a 49ers defensive line room led by defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, a respected coach who could maximize his talent. Learning alongside veterans such as Bosa and Huff could further accelerate his development.

If the 49ers are serious about fixing a pass rush that ranked last in the NFL, adding a proven collegiate producer would be a sensible first-round move.
