The San Francisco 49ers made a notable roster adjustment ahead of their Week 1 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. According to the NFL transaction wire, the team has released wide receiver Russell Gage.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the 49ers intend to re-sign Gage to their practice squad and elevate him for Sunday's game at Lumen Field—assuming he doesn't land with another team in the meantime.

The move frees up a roster spot, which will reportedly go to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 notes that the veteran receiver will be promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. However, the move is not yet official.

Meanwhile, San Francisco continues to explore additional depth at wide receiver. The team recently hosted former 49ers wideout Kendrick Bourne for a workout, though he is currently visiting with the Washington Commanders. The 49ers reportedly extended a contract offer to Bourne following his visit.
On the injury front, Jauan Jennings returned to practice this week after dealing with a calf injury—and a contract standoff. He and second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall are expected to start against Seattle in Sunday's season opener.
