The Las Vegas Raiders have officially entered the Michael Mayer era as the Notre Dame product, and the 2023 second-round pick signed his contract and can now fully prepare for this upcoming season. Meanwhile, another player could be signing a contract soon with the Silver and Black as veteran cornerback Marcus Peters could be heading to Vegas to provide the team with more secondary depth.

Michael Mayer officially joins the Raiders

The Raiders decided to part ways with Darren Waller as they traded the 30-year-old to the New York Giants for a third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, which the team used to draft receiver Tre Tucker out of Cincinnati.

Additionally, trading Waller resulted in the Raiders drafting his replacement. Vegas officially ushered in the Mayer era as both parties reached contract terms Wednesday (h/t Las Vegas Review-Journal).

The 35th overall selection registered 180 receptions for 2,099 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns during his three seasons for the Fighting Irish. Mayer likely won’t be asked to fill Waller’s shoes immediately, as the Raiders have Austin Hooper and O.J. Howard on the depth chart.

Nonetheless, expect Mayer to be the go-to guy for whoever is under center in the future.

Are the Raiders adding depth to their secondary? Marcus Peters coming in?

Preseason is approaching, so Vegas wants to bolster its secondary. The Athletic’s Vic Tafur and Tashan Reed reported on Wednesday, citing league and team sources, that the Raiders seem likely to sign Peters before training camp.

The veteran cornerback visited last month, and the two parties have remained in communication as Peters tests the market.

Vegas reportedly has other veteran cornerbacks on their list, but Peters could sign with the team he grew up rooting for as a kid in Oakland. The 30-year-old started 13 games for the Baltimore Ravens last season and had 47 tackles, two for loss, a sack and an interception.
