The Denver Broncos are hoping that they've struck gold with Bo Nix, their potential franchise quarterback — a feat that's easier said than done in the NFL. Heading into his second season in the NFL, Nix is trying to avoid the infamous sophomore slump, something that Peyton Manning said shouldn't be an issue with Nix heading into 2025.

Now, the talented quarterback has been given even more praise, this time from none other than Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees, who provided some insight into Sean Payton's offense and how Nix can be successful. Additionally, Brees shared that Payton's offense is 20 years in the making, as many of Payton's key guys from his days in New Orleans are now with the team in Denver. Brees may have shown a little more of Payton's hand during the interview, explaining the Broncos' blueprint for success from his days working with Sean.

"Bo Nix is a really fun quarterback to watch," Brees said. "I think he's got all the traits, all the tools. Great athlete, really runs well. I don't think he gets enough credit for how well he runs. Not surprising, we've had discussions about being a multi-sport athlete and when you're being a really good quarterback. He was an exceptional track athlete, I can see it when he runs. I think he ran the 400, which is a man's race. That is a legit race. And so, you see that when he takes off and runs, it's like he gets faster as he gets 20, 30, 40 yards down the field. Big, strong athlete, obviously great with the short and intermediate passing game, very accurate, gets the ball out of his hands quickly. But, can really push the ball down the field as well."

I spoke with our New Orleans Saints beat writer at A to Z Sports to see what he thought of Brees' comments on Bo Nix going into year two.

"The legendary QB is confident that a second season in the scheme and around a lot of the same talent will help him find even more consistency. With that, the entire offense will be able to get off to faster starts and finish strong, too. Brees knows the commitment of Payton to find every opportunity imaginable to give his team an advantage. I would be really surprised not to see more interesting wrinkles to the play calling for Denver that will only show more trust in Nix. Even as a young QB, he has quickly garnered the respect of Brees and Payton both." - Adam Holt, A to Z Sports New Orleans

Blueprint for success in Denver

Brees discussed what type of offense Payton likes to run and how it's a nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators. Perhaps showing a little bit of Payton's hand along the way, it was fantastic insight from one of the very best to ever play the game. However, giving such detailed insight into how Payton likes to run his offense might be a little more telling than some fans would like.

"Within the framework of Sean's offense, look, he has this reputation as just 'throw it, throw it, throw it,'" Brees said. "But man, he wants to establish the run, and he recognizes how important that is not just to create balance with the defense but also to open up the play-action passing game. He loves the hard play action to be able to throw the ball down the field, especially with some of these big, fast guys that they have [. . .] Sean Payton is a great screen developer and screen caller. He loves no-huddle packages [. . .] I need a QB who can communicate that very clearly and then make very quick and decisive decisions to get the ball out, and then you're not worrying about protection [. . .] All those things are Sean Payton's dream and a defensive coordinator's worst nightmare."

Sean Payton's system is 20 years in the making

If, for some reason, you're unaware of who Drew Brees is, first go on YouTube and watch some of his highlights because he was beyond electric. More importantly, Brees and Payton had spent time together in New Orleans when Payton was the head coach of the Saints throughout Brees' career. They were together for 15 seasons and won Super Bowl XLIV together, an emotional victory after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina less than five years prior. It was one of those Hallmark-type wins, just super emotional, and it was difficult not to cheer for them specifically in that season.

During his tenure with Payton, he totaled 6,017 completions for 68,010 yards and 491 touchdowns with 190 interceptions. Put plainly, Brees knows how to be a successful quarterback. Speaking of how Payton has been able to find success with the Broncos, he points back to his days with the Saints.

"Sean has all of his assistants that he had with the Saints: Joe Lombardi, Pete Carmichael, Zach Streif. It's all these guys that have been in that system now for almost 20 years," Brees offered. "I mean, legitimately, so think about the institutional knowledge and from where it started to where it is now. And now Bo Nix is coming in and learn this new language and get caught up. But gradually over time, I think he'll take more and more responsibility within the framework of the offense. The sky's the limit for a guy like that."

If Brees' comments were any indication, Payton is a phenomenal football coach who has continued to adapt and develop as the game has changed on the field. With sky-high hopes of bringing back a Lombardi Trophy to Denver, all eyes are going to be on Denver and their second-year quarterback, and they won't have to wait long. The regular season begins on Sept. 7 with a showdown against the Tennessee Titans. We can't wait for kickoff to begin.
