Browns’ Deshaun Watson Shares Clear Update on NFL Future

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson does not sound like a player winding down.

At 31, with a twice-repaired Achilles tendon and only 21 games played over the last five seasons, many around the league have already begun treating him as a short-term option whose massive contract expires after this year.

Few expect him to remain a viable starter in Cleveland or elsewhere once 2026 is over. Watson sees the situation differently.

Head coach Todd Monken offered an unexpected note of support on Monday, describing Watson as young and still improving after a better showing in Week 2 than the disastrous opener against Jacksonville.

Watson himself went further.

Asked whether he considers himself young, he replied, “I’m not sure. I feel like I have a lot of football left in my game, in my career, and that’s how I approach the game. That’s how I approach my preparation on and off the field. And yeah, I feel like, I’m ten years in, but still got a lot of football to play, definitely for myself.”

That outlook may strike some as optimistic given the injury history and the modest production since he arrived in Cleveland.

Yet Watson did deliver a needed spark in Tampa Bay, helping the Browns rally to take and hold a lead for their first win of the season. When reminded that doubters remain, he pointed to the work no one sees.

“I know my preparation. I know what I put in, the time I put in, the thought, the sacrifice that I put in for that moment on Sunday. So, it was definitely a great team win. I needed everyone around me to be able to get that win. And I want to keep on improving and trying to get more.

“So, like I mentioned before, I love the game. I love what the game brings into this locker room as a team. And I just enjoy playing the game, and this is what I’ve been doing my whole life. So, like I said, I want to continue to play for as long as possible.”

The comments amount to a public declaration that Watson intends to keep chasing a starting job after this season, even if that job is unlikely to stay in Cleveland.

Whether another team will buy the same vision of a veteran still building rather than fading is an open question.

For now, Watson is framing the remaining games as proof of concept rather than a farewell tour, insisting the preparation and the love of the game have not changed even if the surrounding narrative has.

The Browns will face the Carolina Panthers this Sunday.
