Bucs' offense makes NFL history after win over Saints

It's been an unforgettable season in Tampa, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.

How good was Liam Coen's group in 2024?  In one respect, it's a unit that just did something no other offense has done in the history of the league.

According to the team's communication department, the Bucs became the first team in NFL history to complete at least 70% of their passes and rush for at least 5 yards per carry.

The stat accentuates the success the Bucs had in 2024 both through the air and on the ground, as well as the balance they maintained throughout the season.

Tampa Bay is the only team in the NFL this year to rank in the top five in the NFL in total yards per game (399.4 - third), passing yards per game (250.4 - third), and rushing yards per game (149.2 - fourth).  As such, it's not simply the case of a team being just statistically efficient in the passing game or running little but effectively.  It was a case of being highly productive in both this season.

The obvious change was in the incredible turnaround in the Bucs' rushing attack, which was one of the worst in the NFL for years. A lot of that improvement can by way of two key rookies. Center Graham Barton and RB Bucky Irving both had a big impact on the ground game.  Barton was a big upgrade in the middle, and Irving had the best season of any rookie ballcarrier this season, leading all rookies in yards from scrimmage with 1514 (1122 rushing and 392 receiving).

Add in the improvement of guard Cody Mauch and Luke Goedeke, and it's been one of the best groups in football.

Of course, it all starts with Coen's creative play calling and personnel input, where it appears he's pushed all of the right buttons this season.  We'll see if the Bucs can find a way to retain him, as he will surely be one of the most sought-after head coaching candidates of this cycle.

We'll see soon enough if the Bucs' strong offense can help fuel them to another playoff run starting this weekend.
