Cam Newton’s NFL future may be in a state of uncertainty at the moment, but one of his off-the-field projects is certainly off to an impressive start.
In December, the former Carolina Panthers quarterback had a series greenlit by upstart streaming service Quibi called “Iron Sharpens Iron.”
According to Variety, the series “will pair star athletes with another professional athlete from a completely different sport.” The athletes will “trade training secrets and ideas, as well as explore high-level sports science and fitness.”
In a statement, Newton laid out what’s in store with his upcoming series: “We’re excited to bring some of the world’s top athletes together to share their insider fitness tips and personal experiences that have made each into top athletes in their respective sports. It’s a great way to trade advice amongst peers and give our fans and budding athletes deeper insight into our highly coveted regimens through a greater platform.”
At the time of the announcement, Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young, UFC champion Amanda Nunes, and U.S. Women’s National Team captain Carli Lloyd had signed on for the series’ eight-episode first season.
Now, UPROXX reports that additional A-listers have joined the roster of star-studded sports guests on Newton’s show. Melvin Gordon, Nyjah Huston, Lolo Jones, Simon Pagenaud, Andy Ruiz Jr., Pascal Siakam, Sloane Stephens, PK Subban, Justin Turner, Kerri Walsh-Jennings, Michelle Wie and Deontay Wilder will all be making appearances on “Iron Sharpens Iron.”
Quibi has a planned launch date of April 6. In the interim, Newton will continue to explore his free-agency options after the Panthers parted ways with the former MVP and ushered in a new era with the signing of Teddy Bridegwater.
At this stage of the game, it’s unclear where Newton might land. However, if he can prove to have regained full health following foot surgery, some NFL team may turn what’s viewed as a reclamation project as one of the biggest steals of this past offseason, if not going back years.
