Cardinals star Chandler Jones requests trade amid contract dispute

Arizona Cardinals edge rusher Chandler Jones has requested a trade following months of the All-Pro linebacker’s name floating in NFL trade rumors due to contract issues and concerns with his future.

Jones, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, is coming off a disappointing 2020 season. He suffered a torn bicep in Week 5, forcing him to sit out the remainder of the year. Before that, he was one of the best players in the NFL and a force off the edge in Arizona’s defense.

Issues arose between the two sides early this spring. Jones, entering a contract year, wanted an extension that kept him in Arizona and made him one of the highest-paid edge rushers in the NFL. Instead, the Cardinals used their cap space to sign J.J. Watt to a two-year, $31 million contract.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Jones requested the trade earlier this offseason. The veteran pass rusher is unhappy about his contract and future with the club, leading to his trade demand.

The Cardinals are still insisting that Jones arrive for training camp. Under the NFL’s new collective bargaining agreement, players face a mandatory $50,000 fine for each day of camp missed.

Jones already skipped minicamp over the contract grievance, but it remains to be seen what approach he’ll take at training camp. He’s one of several NFL stars, including Xavien Howard, Deshaun Watson, Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers, who have either requested a trade or are seeking a new contract this summer.
