The assembled news media noticed something interesting on Tuesday, during the Los Angeles Chargers’ football practice. Quarterback Justin Herbert appeared to be dealing with something they did not know about.
“Justin Herbert has not thrown a football during the media-viewing period today. He was working with a green weighted ball, going through throwing motions during individuals and has only done hand offs and pitches during the team period,” ESPN reported to X, formerly Twitter. “Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei have taken all quarterback throwing reps.”
Chargers fans will likely be monitoring the situation closely. Some NFL insiders feel that the young quarterback is in store for a MVP-caliber season.
“I don’t think we can overestimate how big a difference a healthy Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater could make to Herbert’s efficiency and production. Add in Mike McDaniel at offensive coordinator, and this really could be the season Herbert finally establishes himself as an MVP quarterback,” ESPN reported.
During the 2025 NFL season, Herbert threw for 3,727 passing yards in the regular season. He had 26 touchdown throws to go with 13 interceptions.
The Chargers dealt with some injuries to the offensive line in 2025. It was a tough blow to the team, who had a hot start.
“After starting last season with three straight wins, injuries to the offensive line ultimately upended the Bolts’ 2025 campaign. This time around, the bolstered offensive line is back to health. The addition of coordinator Mike McDaniel should lift the run game and provide offensive balance. With a fresh slate, the Chargers are in a position to at least match last year’s 11-win total,” ESPN wrote.
There is certainly hope that L.A. will be a better squad this season. Time will tell how the Chargers fare in 2026.
