Chiefs Awaiting Punishment After Daniel Jones Incident

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Indianapolis Colts 33-30 in overtime Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City improved to 2-0 on the season, while Indianapolis fell to 0-2 after the dramatic loss.

The Chiefs’ win came despite a penalty by safety Jaden Hicks that could draw additional attention from the NFL. Hicks was flagged for roughing the passer during Indianapolis’ opening touchdown drive, putting the Colts in position to score.

The penalty came with 9:34 remaining in the first quarter. Daniel Jones completed an 11-yard pass to Josh Downs on third-and-4, taking Indianapolis to the Kansas City 3-yard line. Hicks was then flagged for roughing the passer, with the two-yard penalty enforced at the spot and an automatic first down awarded to the Colts.

Indianapolis scored two plays later when Jones connected with Tyler Warren for a 1-yard touchdown. The Colts eventually took a 20-17 lead into halftime before Kansas City rallied in the second half and overtime.

Hicks finished the game with five tackles, including four solo tackles, according to Kansas City’s official game statistics. The 24-year-old safety entered his third NFL season after recording four tackles in the Chiefs’ Week 1 victory over the Denver Broncos.

The roughing-the-passer call does not automatically mean Hicks will receive a fine. The NFL reviews plays from every game and identifies potential violations for further examination before determining whether additional discipline is warranted.

The league’s 2026 fine schedule lists $17,911 for a first offense involving roughing the passer and $23,882 for a repeat offense.

The NFL’s Week 1 accountability report included four fines categorized as hits on quarterbacks. Carolina’s Derrick Brown and Green Bay’s Lukas Van Ness were each fined $17,911, while Houston’s Mario Edwards received an $8,263 fine and the Los Angeles Rams’ Tyler Davis was fined $6,225.

The Chiefs safety may have to wait for the NFL’s Week 2 accountability report on Saturday to learn whether the league takes further action on the penalty.
