The Cleveland Browns sent the NFL into a frenzy on Monday when they decided to end the Myles Garrett partnership and ship him to Los Angeles.

In exchange, the Los Angeles Rams sent defensive end Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 third-round pick to Cleveland.

As soon as the trade was announced, many wondered what it would mean for the Browns’ plans. Losing your best player, one of the most impactful defenders in the game, could only mean that they are in full tanking mode.

General manager Andrew Berry poured water on those rumors. He addressed the media on Thursday, explaining that the team remains focused on competing.

“I would say, No. 1, all of our goals are still in front of us,” Berry said. “We have an excellent defense with really good players on all three levels, and Jared, he is an outstanding—he is one of the best players in the league. And so we’re excited to have him as part of our team. …

“Myles wasn’t on the trading block, we were not auctioning him off. That was not a primary consideration going into the spring.”

Garrett was the only bright spot the Browns had in the past couple of seasons. Even if they intend to compete, their current roster might not be enough to even bother their AFC North opponents.
