Colts Elevate Two Key Defenders to Gameday Roster
Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

With starting defensive tackle Grover Stewart out for the next five games (suspension) and cornerback JuJu Brents for potentially multiple weeks (quad injury), the Indianapolis Colts have elevated both McTelvin Agim and Chris Lammons from the practice squad to the active roster.

This isn’t surprising, as both Agim and Lammons were put on the practice squad for this very reason. If Indy fell into any injury or roster trouble, either or both would likely be promoted for depth purposes.

Stewart will be a massive void on the defensive side to fill, but Agim showed some moments in the preseason where he could be a gap-filler in the run game and be somewhat effective on the defensive front. So far through his NFL career, he’s snagged 12 tackles, three QB hits, and two passes defended.

Look for Agim to still be behind defensive tackles like Eric Johnson II, Adetomiwa Adebawore, and Taven Bryan in the rotation.

As for Lammons, he’s adding much-needed talent to the CB committee for Indianapolis. After Brents went down with an injury against the Cleveland Browns, the alarm bells sounded for how shallow this Colts’ corner room may look without him.

With rookie Jaylon Jones and training camp darling Darrell Baker Jr. set to step up in Brents’ absence, Lammons is merely for ‘last resort’ purposes. Factor in that fellow rookie CB Ameer Speed was claimed off of waivers from the New England Patriots, and it makes it nearly concrete that Lammons is mostly for insurance, as Speed could see the field in certain defensive situations.

Through his NFL tenure, Lammons has accumulated 26 tackles, three passes defended, and an interception. Lammons has athleticism, but if he ends up seeing consistent snap counts on defense, it could mean that Indianapolis is in dire straights at the cornerback position.
