New Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters is ready to get down to business. With so many decisions needing to be made this offseason, one could have been forgiven for thinking that an overhaul was needed.
Peters doesn't think so.
Instead, he feels that there are good things already happening within the organization, it just needs the right person to lead them.
That's where he comes in.
“There's a lot of good things about this building," Peters said. "First and foremost, just walking through here today, there's a ton of great people in this building, so it's really, this is not a total rebuild. This is a wonderful group of people here that just needs leadership. That's what I think is the biggest thing, is we need leadership and an aligned vision. So that's what I'm going to bring here along with Josh and our head coach. And I don't think there's wholesale change needed. I just think we need leadership here and that's what we're here to bring.”
While Peters will do his best to be the kind of leader the organization needs, part of that is choosing the best head coaching candidate to go on this journey with.
The franchise is under no illusions as to what they are about to undertake, but the process will be a thorough one. With so many candidates to take over the Commanders, just who Peters and owner Josh Harris will go with will be an interesting watch.
“We're looking for the best leader for this team, for the Washington Commanders," Peters said. "And so, we have set criteria that we're going to have it be aligned in that vision. And it's not going to be in a box. It's not going to be offense, it's not going to be defense. It's going to be the best leader for this organization.”
So there are no select criteria for what Peters is looking for and that is a good way to go about his business. He isn't interested in which side of the ball the new head coach is on, he wants leadership.
That is the major point from hearing Peters talk about what needs to change within the organization.
This franchise has lacked leadership, and Peters, along with Harris, seem hellbent on getting the right person who can steer this ship to clearer waters.
