The Detroit Lions lost multiple coaches this offseason. However, they kept one of the most important things: players.
The Chicago Bears lured away former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, naming him HC in January. Former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, meanwhile, became New York Jets HC.
Despite the coaching changes, head coach Dan Campbell indicated the team's roster gives it a strong chance to win its first Super Bowl. The coach believes the squad could be his best since arriving in Detroit in 2021.
"This is the best we've felt about it top to bottom," Campbell told the media Monday . "...And that's a credit to [general manager Brad Holmes]. You know, what Brad's done in the personnel department is outstanding. He's just continued to elevate ... the floor."
Holmes has indeed done a spectacular job building the Lions. Since being named GM in 2021, he has taken multiple stars in the NFL Draft, including EDGE Aidan Hutchinson, running back Jahmyr Gibbs and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
He has also pulled off shrewd trades. In March 2021, Holmes dealt quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for fellow QB Jared Goff and multiple draft picks. Goff has since emerged as one of the NFL's best passers, making two Pro Bowls over the past four seasons.
In a story published on May 29, Pro Football Focus' Max Chadwick and Dalton Wasserman ranked Detroit's roster No. 3 in the NFL. This didn't include its rookies, some of whom are making a strong impression in preseason.
Rookie WR Isaac TeSlaa — a third-round pick out of Arkansas — had 10 receptions for 146 yards and three touchdown catches in four preseason games.
"We don't even really know the ceiling," Campbell said. "There are so many of these players that are continuing to get better and better that are really good players. But by doing that, the floor has really raised. And so, our baseline is pretty dang good right now."
Campbell's confidence in the roster doesn't seem unfounded. It should keep the Lions in the Super Bowl hunt in 2025, even with the departures of Glenn and Johnson.
