Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press shared Thursday that a source told him Slay was “a major cancer” during the 2019 season in Detroit.
“One Lions source, who spoke to the Free Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, said he considered Slay ‘a major cancer’ last season and that ‘he would sit in meetings and not pay attention’ then ‘go into the locker room and tell other players how the coaches are full of s***.'”
It’s worth pointing out that Slay hasn’t exactly shied away from criticizing head coach Matt Patricia since the star cornerback was traded to Philly. In fact, he made it clear in a brutal takedown Thursday that he has no respect for Patricia, whom he said called him out during his first training camp as a rookie head coach back in 2018.
On top of that, after he read Birkett’s article, he quote-tweeted it wondering who said he was “a major cancer.”
A cancer lol!!! I would love to kno who said that! https://t.co/0jbT2WB1IY— Darius Slay (@_bigplayslay23) March 20, 2020
What we know for sure is that Slay couldn’t wait to be traded away from Detroit.
We also know that there were reports emerging from the organization during Patricia’s first training camp that he was already losing his locker room.
So, it’s not surprising that there is no love lost between Slay and his old head coach.
