Dennis Allen's interest in reuniting with a former second-round pick shows how dire the Bears pass rush is following Austin Booker's injury

When the Chicago Bears finalized the 53-man roster last week, there were still some noticeable concerns with the initial group heading into Ben Johnson's first season as the head coach.

While speaking with reporters after final cuts were made, general manager Ryan Poles noted the team will sift through the various players around the league to see who could improve the roster, as long as they were also the best fit for the locker room.

As a result, the Bears only made two waiver claims by reuniting with cornerback Jaylon Jones and pairing linebacker D'Marco Jackson back up with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. And it seems like Allen has his eyes on another former player of his that can help add to the depth of his unit.

Isaiah Foskey expected to work out with the Bears this week

One of the most concerning issues on the defensive side of the ball heading into Week 1 is easily the depth off the edge behind starting defensive ends Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo after the team placed Austin Booker on the injured reserve with a designation to return after Week 4, and it's something the coaching staff seems to be aware of.

CBS Sports senior reporter Matt Zenitz shared on Tuesday that former New Orleans Saints second-round pick Isaiah Foskey is scheduled to work out with the Bears ahead of the team's Week 1 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.

Foskey, obviously, has familiarity in Dennis Allen's scheme after playing the last two seasons under the former Saints head coach, but his time in New Orleans wasn't as fruitful as the once highly-touted prospect anticipated.

Foskey will forever be an enigma for the Saints’ draft history. After being a dynamic, productive pass rusher during his college days at Notre Dame, he simply never found any footing in black and gold - opposed to navy and gold.

Foskey totaled a half of a sack in regular season play for New Orleans over two full seasons. He never started a game after being a second-round pick and struggled to see consistent time on special teams, either. As a result, the Saints released Foskey last week during its own final roster cuts.

More often than not, hesitation got the better of Foskey, preventing him from showing off the speed and explosiveness he played with at Notre Dame. In Allen's aggressive-style scheme, hesitation is not the best fit, despite Foskey having all the desired physical traits Allen looks for off the edge.

Saints' standout defensive lineman Cam Jordan was asked about Foskey's development earlier in the month and had nothing but positive things to say but shared what's still holding him back.

"He likes to play physical and he has amazing speed when he decides to put it all in gear," Jordan explained. "The moment the game starts slowing down for him, you can start seeing him make more plays. He's smoothed out his steps, instead of the hundred steps to go three-yards, now he's galloping. He's taken off and that's going to bode well for his future. If you're looking for him to be an impact player Day 1, maybe we could have forced it. But the way that he's progressed, I think he's going to have a bright future."

Allen surely still has some connections in the building with the Saints and kept an eye on Foskey's development as a rotational player. Bringing him in for a closer look would be the perfect opportunity as a low-risk solution to help out at the position.
