The Philadelphia Eagles have one of the best collections of skill position stars in the game, as AJ Brown and Devonta Smith might be the best 1-2 wide receiver punch in the league and Saquon Barkley is as good as it gets at the running back position.
However, the depth Philly has on the defensive side of the ball is way ahead of what they have on offense. The Eagles' inability to develop a No. 3 wide receiver behind Brown and Smith might not be a crippling fault, but it could cause some problems if the Eagles are handed some unfortunate injury news.
ESPN ranked the lack of a No. 3 wide receiver as the biggest overall need on this team at the moment. Philly chose not to address this position with one of their premium picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.
If either Brown or Smith were to miss any extended period of time, even a run-heavy offense like Philly could be in for a world of pain when it comes to competing against some of the better defenses. Philadelphia may need to swing a trade at some point in the near future.
Jahan Dotson, a Penn State alum and former first-round pick acquired from the division rival Commanders, recorded just 19 catches in the regular season and didn't find the end zone until the postseason. Imagine if Dotson has to earn the same target share as either Smith or Brown as a receiver.
Gargantuan 6-7 wideout Johnny Wilson is a very limited player who still needs a ton of work before he is going to become a quality target for Hurts. Ainias Smith was at the bottom of the depth chart last season, and Terrance Marshall Jr. has failed to stick on multiple teams acorss the league.
The Eagles' offense is enough of a juggernaut that they should be able to tread water and keep winning games with one of their big pass-catchers hurt, especially now that top tight end Dallas Goedert has agreed to a revised contract that will keep him in Philadelphia.
However, if Dotson is forced to play as a WR2 for the bulk of a longer playoff run, or if Hurts takes a slight step back as a passer thanks to the loss of Kellen Moore, there could be some passing game struggles that make it difficult for the Eagles to defend their title.
